When labourers were\nout all day under the hot sun\,\nprotection was a necessity. During\nthe late 18th to early 19th century\,\nthe wearing of straw hats by\nfarmers and labourers was quite\ncommon in both North America\nand Europe\, since the materials\nwere inexpensive and readily\navailable.
