When labourers were\nout all day under the hot sun\,\nprotection was a necessity. During\nthe late 18th to early 19th century\,\nthe wearing of straw hats by\nfarmers and labourers was quite\ncommon in both North America\nand Europe\, since the materials\nwere inexpensive and readily\navailable. This weekend staff will\nbe demonstrating the traditional\nart of straw-hat braiding.

DESCRIPTION:Intro to Hide Tanning \nInstructor: Maggie Oickle with Maggie’s Natural World \nWhen: June 10th & 11th (two separate classes) **10:00am – 3:00pm** \nWhere: Ross Farm Museum\, 4568 Highway #12\, New Ross\, NS \nCourse description: Join Maggie Oickle for an Introduction to Hide tanning! She will be breaking down the process with her visual step-by-step guide to show you how to go\, start to finish\, turning hides into leather. As you go through the day and information\, you will have some examples of hides in various stages\, and the tips and tricks that will help you in your hide tanning journey. She will also touch base on other types of hides\, and some similarities and differences she has come across between deer\, rabbit\, cow\, coyote\, and bear hides as she works with them. You will also go over the tools required\, and some startup items\, as well as have an opportunity to stretch a hide yourself as you go into the afternoon. This is a reduced-cost workshop\, as it is the summer\, there are burn bans\, which means the hands-on portion is a little less than our winter workshops. \nWhat you need to bring: We will be inside\, please feel free to bring paper and pen. We will have some extras. Maggie will have the information available in digital copy or hard copy for purchase the day of the event\, as well. \nRefreshments: There will be a coffee and tea bar set up for you to enjoy in the museum gift shop for purchase\, with some light refreshments provided by Maggie. \nPrice: $100/per person\, and $75 for a second seat! DESCRIPTION:Christmas In the Country Dec 3 rd & 4 th \nBring the family for one of our favourite annual events! Enjoy cookies and spiced cider in Rosebank Cottage. Take a walk around the farm while you keep an eye out for our family of gnomes hiding all throughout the property\, find them all for a little treat at the giftshop on your way out. There will be craft activities in the schoolhouse and farm wood working shop\, also have a visit with the farmer in the Ross Barn to learn about our many heritage farm animals. If weather permits wagon rides will be taking place and you can hop on for a tour with our friendly teamster and Canadian horses and learn about the history of the farm and much more! We put in a request and Father Christmas has promised us that he will be taking time out of this busy schedule for this very special event and will be here both days! As always\, the site will be decorated for your enjoyment and a photo area will be set up for families to take pictures.
