200th Anniversary-Packing the Time Capsule

New Ross remembers 2016 as a “year long celebration”.  We marked the 200th anniversary with wonderful events, anniversary musings, spectacular enthusiasm, friends old & new, laughter, food! and memories to last a lifetime.

We started the year with an opening of the 150th time capsule and book launch, updating our History of New Ross, to include the last 50 years.

Our local winery kicked off their label contest for their limited edition 200th anniversary cider! The children got involved early on with a Heritage Day display featuring local history and traditions, and also had an amazing Art Walk which floored the whole community showcasing their wonderful talents.  May arrived with the grand opening of our beloved Ross Farm’s new Learning Centre, and we kicked the party off right with a May Day Music Fest, where we relished in the amazing local talent, and heard many an original song and poem by local artists writing and singing about their New Ross.  We celebrated Canada in “old fashion style” at the bandstand and legion July the first and then hosted a spectacular founding-weekend long celebration from Aug 5th-7th.  It was an eclectic array at the night market Friday night with fire artists, belly dancers, stilt walkers, contortionists, fortune tellers, refreshments and a bountiful amount of food!
This sparked an incredible chain of events for the entire weekend, highlighted by a parade, woodsman competition, antique displays, artisans, musicians/bands, tolling of the bells, 200 Gun Salute, Mary Ross Tea, open houses, fireworks…and guess who was awarded the Lt Governor’s Community Spirit Award that weekend by none other than the Lt Governor himself and Premier Stephen McNeil! But the celebrations did not stop there.  We continued with Oktoberfest, a Social Evening & Silent Auction, and topped it off with our 23rd Annual New Ross Christmas Festival complete with carolers, musical entertainment, craft fairs, Christmas Tree U-picks, and you guessed it… food!

All that remains is one final event…Packing of the Time Capsule to be opened in 2066 for their 250th anniversary!  There is little doubt this vibrant “Hidden Gem” will indeed still be going strong.  So please join us, in topping off a wonderful year of celebration on Sunday Jan 22, 2017 from 2-4pm at the Forties Community Centre, as we pack the 200th anniversary Time Capsule.  We are proud of our community and the wonderful year we have had celebrating our 200th.  When the new time capsule is opened in 2066 we want our community to be amazed, surprised and encouraged as they see all that happened this year.

Thanks for the memories, New Ross.
