    In earlier years usually in November, families prepared for winter by putting up barrels of sauerkraut.  This is a process in which cabbage is shredded, salted, and stomped in a barrel and then allowed to ferment for 4 to 6 weeks.

    In the early 1800’s the only source of light would have been by candle.  Many families would have had to make their own candles or else go with no light at all.  Come join staff at the Ross Farm in making candles just like the settlers would have done years ago.
